windows updates do not require a cd key, if you are wanting to install xp on another machine the you may be able to get a key off the net(good luck) if you copy is a standard retail copy.

also you can call microsoft, they can help you find it. or you can search the net theres a way to find your product key on the system....

If you're talking about going to the microsoft update site, they don't require the CD key.

You just connect to the Windows update site, they validate your version by matching your mac address with the encoded key of your software.

I've never been asked for a CD key and I've updated many machines.

You shouldnt need it for Updates.

If you want to find your key,,
go here and download & run this.
Simple program,,very small & quick,,and no crapware/spyware.
(Stupid name though,lol)

If you have trouble getting Updates ,,you can select 'Automatic Updates".

If you DO go that route,,,,
Windows will automatically download and install,,then Reboot your PC,,,,as a matter of it's Default Installed settings.

You can Change the settings to ONLY NOTIFY You when new updates are available.
Then you can Select the ones you want,,,dowload them and reboot your PC at Your convenience.

Hope that helps,,Good Luck

xp service pack 2 is free.if you have a valid copy of windows just go to windows update.or you can look for it at "Windows Market Place".Warning! if you uninstall service pack2 two things can happen:your computer may become very unstable.or it may fail to reboot-up the next time you restart.
