Ok,I have been writing songs for under a year for a grunge band. What I try too do is write the music first play it over and over again and see what kinda vibe it get from it.
Is it a happy song like does this make me thing about going out with my friends?Doe's it make me think about how bad my day was and how much someone makes me angry(I write best when I am mad it grows in me)or is it a kinky song.
Get what I am saying?Like having the music first helps me and I write most of my lyrics in about 10mins.It used to take me forever 3people to study their lyrics are:1.Bob Dylan the best ever at writing lyrics couldn't always sing but hey!2.John Lennon you feel what he is saying! He makes you care about what he is saying throe his words.3.Sheryl Crow very down to earth you become one with her, because she makes her words fit her music!
Hope it helps,oh and Eddie Vedder(sp?) is pretty good too.

Free verse is the easiest way to start just think about things that inspire, anger or envoke emotion in you and then write down anything and everything you think of...then go back later and pick out parts you like or think flow well together. It's a great way to get started!

Rock songs? - I think writers do write about any stuff, like what's happening with their surroundings, everyday life, things they've observed, political stuff, environmental, could be fictional, their emotions too--could be love, happiness, hate, anger or whatsoever. So I guess it all must come from the heart.
I do hope you could write your song!

Then maybe yo should seriously consider going into a different occupation other than being a Lyricist. You need to be creative, inventive and full of imagination.

just think of a topic. try school, i've written a song about school, it wasnt really hard! try to think of the chorus after you have the topic. my friend was joking around, and said," school sucks, and my friends all hate me" and it was pretty catchy, so it became the chorus!

well if i said how to, then it wouldn't be completely your song anymore would it??
you need to think yourself how to write them, so that you can relate to them.
hint: picka topic you either know lots about, or something thats happened to you etc. that should get you started.
good luck!
