i have an excellent idea for a genetics research project...however, i can't divulge it here as i plan on carrying it out someday and would hate for my idea to be stolen. but it will be groundbreaking!

You would study the human genome, the function of genes. Generally, this is done to understand the causes for genetic diseases, a tendency toward cancer, autoimmune diseases (like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis), or other genetically-related diseases, or things like why we age. The answers a researcher would get could then help with diagnosis and treatment, perhaps even cures for various problems.
Another application for studying the human genome would be to actually modify or design a genome to optimize some attribute - strength, tendency toward obesity, intelligence, endurance, etc. These things are not possible today, and there are serious ethical questions surrounding tampering with a person in this fashion, but it could happen someday.

Birth defects. They are devastating. Trisomy 18 and spina bifida are just cruel. The parents end up with still born kids or kids that only live 2 painful years. I would study those to try and rid the world of them. I doubt the diversity folks would champion the necessity of having these maladies continue.

Actually I'm going to school to do exactly this... my main interest is with genetic inherited diseases. It's unfair for people to be born with diseases completely outside of their control and have no way to help themselves, especially those diseases that affect young children and cause them to die before they ever get to attend school or anything.
