I have a 97 geo metro 1.3? 4Cyl. After noticing a rough idle, I took the head off to reveal a burnt exhaust valve on the #3 piston. I took it to a head shop to get it replace and seated. I put the head back on, tried to crank it but it wouldnt turn over. After a few tries, I could hear what sounded like the engine turning over. But it wouldnt start. I took the timing belt cover off to reveal a broken timing belt. After looking around I notice that the Crankshaft will turn with no problem, but the Camshaft will NOT TURN in either direction, it is completely stuck and wont budge. Hence, the broken timing belt.

Of course I have used a new head gasket, and I have also torqued the bolts in sequence and lbs.in. as specified in the haynes manual. I am guessing, like on person mentioned, that the camshaft is seized maybe to one corner being tighter than the other.

I am no mechanic, but I know that even with bent valves the camshaft should at least move in one direction or another. I can take a socket and breaker bar to the end of the camshaft and attempt to turn it. It will not budge and just rocks the whole engine(not surprising how small it is).

The head could be warped and the camshaft is seized in the bearings.

i own a repair shop, and something had to bind it up like that you need to go back over it and look a it again,i have done a lot of those cars and never had that problem ever, you should be able to move the cam shaft, check and see if it has any end play in it,its need some ,a few thousands will do,also check and see it the thrust plate is on the wrong way,i think the problem will be in the front of the head on it,all you can do is start checking things to see for sure, good luck,i hope this help,s.

It sounds like the camshaft bearings ( or what they call bearings) are burnt out or have debris stuck in them. Remove the camshaft and carefully check the surfaces. If any problem contact the head shop.

They messed up your head. I would guess they got the bearing caps mixed up. Either way, this shows they never even bothered to rotate the cam and check for proper assembly.

In didn't realize those cars were repairable.

Either you have the caps mixed up or the head torque is a mile out.
