It's a reversal of "Romeo and Juliet." The woman appears to be dead, but, because the "good guy" is destined to be with her, they fool the evil prince and live happily ever after. The hibernation comment someone made is a good one.
BTW, i havent seen "The Prestige" yet, but most of my friends said "The Illusionist" was better. Now that "The Prestige" is out on video, I can make my own mind up.

He gave here the potion that makes you hibernate (they talked about it earlier in the film). It is a lame movie device and lazy writing. One could assume that an autopsy might not be performed because of obvious signs of death (drowning, wound), but don't you think a doctor might, say, check for a pulse? There would still be blood flowing and the resulting body warmth, even if greatly reduced.
I see this movie going the way of Wyatt Earp. A good flick, but they were dumb enough to release it at the same time as a superior film that dealt with the same subject (Tombstone). The Prestige is better.

He gave her a "hibernation" potion and they set up the prince for her death.
The "Doctor" was actually someone hired by Eisenheim to play the family doctor. That is how they got her out of there.

The magician came up with the whole plan where she faked her death and the prince got framed for murder. This plan was necessary because otherwise, the prince would not let her and the magician be together. The only way for them to be together was to eliminate the prince.
