is a generally recognized symbol of Jewish Community and Judaism. It is named after King of ancient Israel; and its usage began in the Middle Ages, alongside the more ancient symbol of the menorah.
With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 the Star of David on the Flag of Israel has also become a symbol of Israel.

In Germany, before and during WWII all Jews were required to sew a yellow star of David on their clothing to display their heritage to everyone. There were other symbols used as well. Mentally ill, Gypsies Homosexuals and other minority all had to wear patches on their clothing. It was a type of profiling that allowed military and civilian officials to employ harrassment tactics and then sieze property from these people. The profiling escalated to "the final solution" which was the purging of these groups from the fatherland. That is how so many were killed. Hope this helps!
