It really depends on the format of the league.
If it is head to head or rotissirie, check if pitchers or batters have more catagories. If one has significantly more, then try to get a few studs of either pitchers or batters. If they are about even, look for batters, and in particularly power hitters. Power hitters are going to get more 2B's, HR's, and RBI's. Speed players only really get more SB. Often speed players will bat slightly higher averages too, but not a big difference.
In a points league look at the settings. One thing that can be done on the yahoo game is checking how many points players scored the previous year. If pitchers scored significantly more then the player with Santana will have a significant edge in the league. Most points leagues however slightly favor the hitters. If that is the case draft power hitters again because a HR is almost always more points then a SB and more HR's will be hit.

If you are in an auto draft and you are asking how to setup your pre-ranking, my suggestion would be - Don't mess with it. For the most part it is fairly accurate other than some minor changes (or guesses) on my part. In an autodraft it is harder to plan a draft strategy because you don't get to see what player is available when it is your next pick. In a live draft I usually have 7 or 8 different draft strategies based on who I get and how others are drafting - If I get A-Rod it will tell me I need to draft a different player than I would had I got Reyes or Pujols.
So in an auto draft, just leave it alone and you will get a decent team. With one exception - go through the pre-rankings and look for injured players who you may not want and put them on your exclude list. I usually only pre-rank the first 150 for my auto draft leagues. And I just put Johan on my Exclude list so I don't have to move him down for no reason, he will be gone anyway. I will not take a pitcher in the first 3 rounds. A great pitcher like Johan will only win 20 games a year - you play 162. I also pay attention to pitchers and stats and am good at picking spot starters against slumping teams. Most average pitchers will win 11-12 games - if you know which ones, no one can touch you.

Pitchers are always ridiculously inconsistent. You really cannot count on to reflect past performance. Check Peavy, Colon, Felix. Furthermore, there will always be gems that appear later in the season such as Jered Weaver. The only pitcher I would take top 5 would be Santana. He is a machine that is the model of consistency. The rest of my top 5 would probably be Pujols, Reyes, Soriano, and Howard. The end verdict? Take batters.

Well Pujols is a sure 1st overall.
I usually do hitters. They play 5-7 times a week while the pitchers play twice AT MOST.
Since most people pick hitters first, I would hold off on pitchers until 3rd/4th round... Unless you want Santana or Carpenter.

Alfonso Soriano should be ranked nuber #1 on your list. After that you list 2 pitchers then 2 hitters and atlernate the formula for the first 9 to ten rounds. Be sure to include closers.

common fact you draft the best batter over the best pitcher, as long as he is higher ranked
