If you're interested look up something called "Flash Memory" in Wikipedia or someplace. It's the memory used for a lot of portable and wireless stuff including SIM cards. The thing that makes Flash memory work is something called a "Floating Gate Transistor". I won't describe how it works, but a Floating Gate Transistor is a variation on the MOSFET technology used in CPU's, which basically takes the form of a tiny sandwich. If you check out MOSFETs in Wikipedia you'll see a picture of one. Well, they can make those sandwiches really small (45 nanometers). To give you a sense of scale a human hair is usually somewhere in the neighborhood of one hundred microns across, which is about two thousand times larger.
