People can name there kids what ever they want. But it does seem that some parents name their kids some funky names and kids do pick on other kids with funny names. I say to parents please don't punish you kids with crazy hard to spell let alone pronounce names you kids would appreciate it.
Also, unfortunately perception is reality if people are given an uncommon name or a deep ethnic name then it is possible that stereotypes will occur. Everyone stereotypes it is human nature if you say you don't you are a hypocrite.
A little story, I was with some friends of mine whom happen to be black we went into a McDonald's and we were harassing the typical stereotype nerdy white boy working behind the counter and we were giving him the whitest names we could think of just to be funny. Like Pete, or Brian.
Again I say stereotypes are in all races we cannot lash out against this young lady for her question. If this question bothers you so much then you life has mostly likely been a tough one.

Your opinion of "strange names" may not be strange to those who actually use them. Why do the Japanese name their kids Koichi or Yuki? Are those names strange to you, too? It's a cultural thing.

Of course names like Laquisha have negative stereotypes attached to them (go figure) so I got a "normal" name.

I think that your question is slightly stereotypical...I believe that people have the right to name their children as they wish...I don't believe naming your child a specific term denotes their relative intelligence, respectability, or sense of individuality in the world. In response to an earlier comment, you are right in suggesting that those with more 'ethnic-sounding' names may experience difficulty in the job application process. However, the denial of a person's opportunity to receive a job based on their name is discriminatory and disrespectable...I don't believe that a person named 'jason' is inherently more qualified for a position than someone named 'jerome' ....I believe it's a silly way of differentiating people based on their name and the implication of their assumed background. Why don't we (as a nation) focus less on the peculiarities of our fellow neighbors and re-prioritize our energies for the greater good.

I have no idea. I guess people want their children to be unique.
I am very blessed that my parents gave me a normal name - Eleanor. My sister's name is Emily.
It makes me sad that people won't wake up and realize that naming their children like that makes it harder for them to get jobs. It has been proven that people with more "ethnic" sounding names are less likely to get called in for an interview even though they have the same or better qualifications as someone named David or Jennifer. Hmmm.
BTW- it's not just black folks. I grew up with a white girl named Kenyahna.

African human beings are often extra resourceful, i've got self belief. Having a diverse call can no longer limit you from life opportunities, the two. I advise, if somebody says, "properly, i do no longer choose for somebody named Sheniqua working for me!" Then that individual is possibly no longer a solid individual to be employed via simply by fact of their for sure biased view.

That is a ridiculous question to ask, why don't you go and ask your parents why the h*ll they gave you your name and what does it mean. People are entitled to name their children whatever they choose to or should everyone have the name Sue and Bob, would that be better? You are the prime example of a white person always "wondering" why the f**k this or why the f**k that about anyone who is not white. Who cares what names people give their children, mind your own business, forget that excuse me, I don't mean any harm or offense because the simple truth is, yes you f**king do, because if you didn't, you wouldn't have asked this question, oh yeah, no offense!!!!

Why do Italians name their kids Tony or Joe? Why do Latinos name their kids Jose or Pedro? These are traditional names for their native cultures. African-Americans often use traditional African names for their kids too.

Yeah I was wondering that too.

@ the person who tried to draw a parallel with "Tony" and "Joe": Isn't that a bad analogy? Those names don't have a set number of syllables and end with a particular sound.

I know what you mean. There is a book called freakonomics and it talks in depth about this subject; consult that if you want a good answer.
