More often than you think.

It is done either to releave pressure on the brain, or to perform brain surgery like tumor removal or an anheurism.

You have to drill through the skull to get to the damaged area.

The also drill a hole to put one in traction some times.

a lot of head traumas can lead to swelling of the brain. because the skull serves as kind of like a casing for the brain, burr holes or "drilling into the skull" is needed to relieve some off the tension caused by the swelling.. similar to letting some air out. also often times when there are clots created within the brain, they are needed to release the extra tension created from those clots, and also to attempt to remove the clots.
