The discovery of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and its correlation to dreaming was discovered in 1953. The study provided proof that when participants woke during REM sleep they could remember a dream. When participants woke not during REM they could not remember dreaming.

You have to be in a very deep sleep to have dreams so when you dont sleep well you dont have dreams. Also when you wake up and you were in the middle of a dream then you probabl could have slept for a while longer.

Dreams are an escape, if we didn't dream we would go mad. We dream every 90 - 100 secs 3 or 4 times a night, when we dream we go into rem(rapid eye movement). So its not that we don't dream, its just that we don't remember. Maybe they weren't significant to us.

Actually, you always have dreams because the brain itself never rests. It's always working on something. The times that you think that you don't have a dream, you just don't remember.

this remembers me about the joke with the bottle of water.
A cop before sleeping puts near to him 2 bottles : 1 full with water and the other empty. why ? because if he's thirsty during the night he's gonna drink, otherwise we won't.
so... we are dreaming if our brain wants or doesn't want.. it's the same thing
