Pure democracy, total rule of the people, would never work. You must remember that the United State is NOT a democracy but rather a Constitutional Republic. Pure democracy would mean that every action, regardless of how small or insignificant it is, must be proposed and approved by the people. Every time we need to pass a new law, approve new funding, give out building permits, or decide the course of war, we must have a caucus so the people can vote and make their choice. This would be a logistical nightmare. Also, the majority rules nature of a pure democracy means that there are no limitations on what the democracy can do. If the majority believes being Muslim should be illegal, it will be illegal, regardless of the rights of Muslims.
Our government, a Constitutional Republic is much better and solves some of these problems. The voice of the people is heard through the election of Representatives and Senators to Congress. Congress then conducts the business of the people, which is much more efficient. We also have limits on what our government can do stated in our Constitution. Even if all the Senators and Representatives and the President believed that being Muslim should be illegal, that law would never stand as it violates our freedom of religion.

Yes, it would be if we actually had a democracy. But if we did really have a democracy, would anyone want to change things? Would you be willing to examine every bill that goes before the Houses & vote on each one? That is what a true Democracy actually is but most people don't think or even know what that means. What we really have is a Republic & most people like it just fine. Democracy is great to a point but as I have explained it, most would never do what a true Democracy means. We all seem to like what we have already.

Plato never liked democracy. This is a system where issues are measured by counts not by weight. For each and every walk of life we need specialisation but in politics we require the art of luring the people.

Communists may run me over by tanks on Tienanmen Square.
Military dictator may shoot me in broad daylight in a Karachi lane.
Anarchists may abduct me from Baghdad for ransom.
Terrorists may have some fun by cutting me into pieces in Kabul or Kathmandu
Fundamentalist may burn me alive in Sudan
I am happy in a democracy where my freedom of expression and my individuality is respected. You are allowed to question the Democracy in democracy - isn't that wonderful?

Not sure worthful is a word, but I get your point. Democracy has both good points and bad points. We actually live in a corporate nationalist society more than anything else, because we can't bend the will of big business to the people. It is our undoing. Once we figure out, we being the people, that businesses should be carrying the lion's share of taxes and NOT the people, then we will have taken the reins back.

It is a costly affair. Any other better system may also prove to be bad. At that time, you may have the right the correct the system. In democracy, correcting the system is al least a theoretical possibility.

Winston Churchill once said that democracy is absolutely the worst form of government, except for all the others.

In democracy the powerful weapon is you and me - its people (mandate).. You can pull down the government if you are not satisfied.
