My baby just turned 6 months. He smiles a lot and finds many things amusing, but does not laugh out loud very often. I would say that he laughs, but it is silent laughter & I'm not sure if this counts. I keep reading that babies should be laughing out loud at this age, so I'm wondering if the lack of out loud laughing is something to be concerned about. (he is doing great developmentally in all other areas). I do many activities to elicit laughter, so you do not need to give me suggestions on how to elicit laughter. I'm just curious what your experiences are with this and if anyone else has had the same issue. Thanks!

my baby's 9 months old now and she doesn't laugh all that often. she was a lot like your baby a few months ago, she'd make the motions like she was laughing but without any sound coming out. then she started doing what seemed like coughing, but it was how she laughed. now she laughs normally, and is acutally laughing right now at a movie i just put on for her! so don't worry, all babies are different and he's developing normally otherwise so you have nothing to worry about!

There is no book or dr that is completely correct on what your child should being doing at each age. Maybe your child has a unique laugh. Maybe he just has a quite laugh and there is nothing wrong with that. My daughter smiled and had small giggles but didn't have bursts of laughter til more towards a year. Every child is different. :)

As long as he is smiling and silently laughing, I would say he is doing alright. Those are just guidelines to follow. Don't be too concerned if he is just a little bit behind. Males, especially, are most often a bit lacking until later. Don't worry.

You child might have a propensity towards being introverted. Just because he isn't laughing out loud doesn't mean he isn't being entertained. One of my sons is that way. We swore he was 3 going on 63. He has always been very introspective and orderly. He does funny things but seldom belts out laughter.

my baby never laughed out loud until just recently, and she
is 10 months now. we always played peek-a-boo and she would smile and do a deep giggle, but that was it. never an actual laugh. now in just the past few weeks when we play, she laughs out loud and when i tickle her she screams and giggles. i too, thought it was odd that she never laughed, she's is great in the developemental areas. but i had to remember that those are just averages that they give you on other babies development and every baby does things on their own.

All baby's develope at different rates. It's nothing to be concerned about. If the baby is healthy and happy, then you should be happy. He'll get there when he's ready to. Everything in baby books is all based on averages. Some do things quicker, some do it later. Your baby is unique. :)

Laughing is laughing. Some people do not make noises when they laugh hard. He could be one of them. I wouldn't worry since you said he is doing well developmentally in other ways.
