It is possible to fullfill our energy needs by solar cells if we can place these solar cells in high orbits(in space) where it gets undiluted solar energy and that also for almost 24 hours.In fact, this will produce much more energy than our need.

But the challenges are:
(1) how effectively we can transfer this high energy back to earth?

(2) The solar cells must be very advanced -- should be self repairing -- thus not needing manual human intervention frequently, which is very costly.

I think other viable options like cold fution e.t.c must also be researched without expecting any immediate result from them.

Scientist just can't manipulate the tools we have now enough to solve the problem and by using semiconductors we can fill some of this void but the problem is not that we don't have a big enough fuel supply. It's that we don't have the meens to get this energy caputered.I think we can fix this but it will take one good person to do it and many hard years to fix it. And eventhough the problem is getting bigger by the day it's not impossible to fix.
