Well, I can tell you that Pythagoras was so prominent in the world of mathematics that he had a following of disciples called the Pythagoreans. They made many mathematical discoveries under the leadership of Pythagoras and they combined this scientific approach with a spiritual belief about the role of math in the universe. If you're open to buying a book, I really recommend "Is God a Mathematician?" The beginning has a lot of really interesting stuff about Pythagoras and the Pythagoreans. Hope that helps. Edit: Although the Pythagorean theorem is named for Pythagoras, it is almost certain that the concept behind that was understood way before his lifetime.

You may be interested to know that Pythagoras may not have discovered the theorem named after him. He was the leader of a group, called the Pythagorean school. It is quite possible that one of his students discovered it and then he would have taken the credit for it.
