I just finished replacing the head gaskets (both sides) with a new feld pro kit. put a new edelbrock 600 cmf performer carb on the performer intake. It had a hard time turning over before I did the gaskets (no coolant was found in the cylinders) she wants to turn over, but just hesitates real slowly. I also replaced the starter with a new hi-tourk chevy unit. what is the biggest battery I can use?, and how many cold cranking amps can I put to it with damaging the starter? I was using a optima 850 but it is 4+ yrs. old. so I'm not sure of the cca it is still capable of.. The compression is around 10.5 to 1 thanks in advance

I had a similar set-up in an '82 Firebird that turned over hard, and seemed to be worse when it was warm. Knocked my head for a number of weeks. tried different starters, shields to keep heat away from starter, on day I noticed a very small, almost invisible, hole in the insulation of the Positive battery cable that goes to the starter. Upon a closer look noticed green stuff in the hole! the entire inside of the cable was oxidized to the point where it was not allowing the full power of the battery to reach the starter, I put on a new cable and it totally cured the problem I was having. Keep in mind there was absolutely no problems with the rest of the electrical system and no symptoms that anything was wrong other than the hard starting, this may or may not be your problem...but it can't hurt looking into it :) BTW I was running an 1100 CCA battery had to modify the battery location a little but it fit.

the starter will pull what it needs , keep your connections clean . i would prime the oil system first , pull the dist. and get a long screwdriver blade that engages the oil pump , spin it with a drill for a few min to get pressure , re-install the dist. and give it a try , some racers with an extreme amount of ign. advance put a ign. cutout switch in and leave it off until the motor is spinning freely then ignite it

check your ground cables from Battery to engine . disconnect ign power lead crank for 10sec then run your hand from end to end on all Battery cables if you feel heat you have a bad connection there.

You can use as big of a battery as you like, so long as it is a 12 volt battery
