My mother always saved bacon grease in a coffee can (I guess because it was too hot to throw in the trash and too greasy to throw down the sink) and then threw out the entire can. Is there a better way to get rid of bacon grease? Would animals eat it if I threw it outside? I guess I'm looking for an easy and environmentally friendly way to get rid of it.

Buy a bag of cheap bird seed and a bag of grapefruit. Cut the grapefruit in half and eat it. Warm up the bacon grease and mix in some bird seed. Pour the mixture into the halved grapefruit, thread a piece of wire, about 15" long, through the grapefruit about 1 1/2" down from the top and put into the freezer. When frozen hang from a tree or high fence. The birds will LOVE you. If you want to cook with it, strain it through a piece of cheesecloth to remove the solids. It'll last much longer.

It would attract animals, but not good ones. Skunks, wild dogs or cats, and rats, most likely!
I usually let mine cool right in the pan, then when it is solid, I scrape it directly into the trash.
