I recommend a ferret then, they are sweet, smart, loyal and easier to train.

If you are trying to find something different other than a dog or cat, I would definetly suggest something besides a ferret or chinchilla.
Ferrets have a funky smell and have and the two my friend owned had a tendency to bite fingers. This may have been a trait unique to his two ferrets but, I wouldn't bet on it.
Chinchillas are similiar to guinea pigs and aren't very affectionate. If you are trying to develop a real bond with a pet these are both a poor choice. You also have the issue of smell again.
A rabbit can be litter boxed trained. But you have to be careful. Personal experience here if you are holding a rabbit and they get scared they will scratch the hell out of you. Their back feet are very very sharp. They are naturally a timid creature, and most do not become very affectionate. But you could get lucky and find one that is. One more word of caution they love to chew on things. Base board along you walls, carpeting, etc.
I would suggest re-evaluating the idea of a cat or dog. There are many many breeds that you may find to your liking.
If this is still not your choice then you could also try a mongoose. I hear they are very good pets if you get one very early in age. However, before you get any unusual, exotic pets, you will need to find out what your city and housing codes allow. Also talk to a vet before purchasing any animal that way you can find out exactly what care and handling will be necessary.
Good Luck in you search.

i also recommend a ferret.
ferrets can be litterbox trained (females are better at doing this). ferrets are definitely playful, entertainging, intelleligent (they can learn tricks, like one of my ferrets was trained to climb up my leg for her toy snake), and they are very funny. they also love to be held, and are very affectionate. if you take it for a walk, or let it get really tired, it will fall asleep in your arms :) (mine did this) they are sooo cute!!
here is more info. on them:

good luck with your decision!!

I suggest a hamster but you need to let them on a couch or bed for them to get used to you. make sure you don't have a snake and if you have a cat or dog don't get a hamster or keep them or it away from the hamster.
