Evidence of the first settlement on where Nottingham now stands date from pre-Roman times but its first mention dates from 600 A.D (Anglo Saxon) not as Nottingham but as Tigguo Cobauc (a place of cave dwellings) only to be captured by the Danes 300 years later.
The famous castle was constructed in the 11 th century (Norman) and the town became a 'county corporate' in 1449.
First mention of its name dates back to Saxon times when it was referred to as 'Snottingham' -the homestead of Snot's people (literally) and over time that was modified to Nottingham its present day name.
