Here are a couple of sources from "way back when" when the story first really hit the media. Two points that keep the story alive are that an expunged record is almost impossible to get your hands on and Bush's refusal to confirm or deny it during the period it hit the media. I guess most people would assume if he hadn't done cocaine he would have no problem saying unequivocally he never had, but he refused to say that. His failure to deny it is what makes me tend to believe it, it doesn't make any sense not to deny it if it never happened. But, just like the old Clinton stories, no proof means it can't be treated as fact.

Oct. 18, 1999 | A new book by Texas author J.H. Hatfield claims that George W. Bush was arrested for cocaine possession in 1972, but had his record expunged with help from his family's political connections. In an afterword to his book "Fortunate Son: George W. Bush and the Making of an American President" (St. Martin's), Hatfield says he took a second look at the Bush cocaine allegations after a story in Salon reporting allegations that Bush did community service for the crime at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Houston's Third Ward.

Governor Bush's Cocaine Problem
This article, first published in the summer of 2000, is not about George Bush's drug use. It is about how he dodges, ducks, and hedges when confronted with his past drug use. American citizens deserve a leader who can be frank and honest.

First he refused to confirm or deny it. Later he would say only that "when I was young and irresponsible, I was young and irresponsible." Next he said that the issue wasn't relevant. Then he said that he wouldn't address "rumors." Then he said that he could pass a standard security check dating back seven years. Finally, he said that he could've passed the security check in his father's White House -- fifteen years. Though he had to think before specifying whether he could've passed it then or now. Now, no matter what he says, the issue seems destined to dog him until the day he comes clean.

Well, he was arrested on drug charges, and he does kind of display some characteristics of past drug use, but not particularly cocaine. He lived through the seventies, and the eighties as a young man in his prime riding on old money, I don't think there is a snowball's chance in Hell he was sober the whole time. I recognize that that is my own opinion, and that's why I don't try to pass that portion off as fact... But that does bring up a good point, b/c I've never actually laid eyes on any formal documentation that describes him having been implicated or apprehended on drug charges... I'll have to do some research, this is intriguing to me.. If I find any, I'll be sure to let you know.

When interviewed by WMUR-TV in New Hampshire, and asked if "drugs, marijuana, cocaine" had ever found their way into his bloodstream, Bush replied: "I'm not going to talk about what I did as a child. What I am going to talk about -- and I am going to say this consistently -- [is that] it is irrelevant what I did 20 to 30 years ago. What's relevant is that I have learned from any mistakes I made. I do not want to send signals to anybody that what Gov. Bush did 30 years ago is cool to try."

Using a substance and abusing a substances are two totally different things. It is fairly clear that Bush used the substance during his younger days. This is very similar to Obama or Clinton using marijuana during their younger days. I don't think any of these men abuse the drugs the previously used.

He had a Driving while intoxicated charge, but no drug abuse charges, so there really is no hard evidence to go on for that one.

I think it is probably likely, but does not make a bit of diference considering how long ago it was. It really is not a factor in my book either way.

I've never heard that except on here from liberals. However, Barak says he used it in one of his books. Notice how the one answer that says yes has no specific reference but the two of us, so far, who know about Barak, have a specific source. Interesting!
