Because at one time dragons probably existed, even the Bible mentions dragons. I recently saw a show where they found the bones of an adult and baby dragon along with human bones leading them to believe that the dragons and humans killed each other. The reason they are found in so many different and diverse countries is for the same reason that we find different versions of the same species or animal groups all around the world today, at one time all the continents were connected, when they separated the species on each had to adapt to the environments they ended up in. Its possible that some dragons still exist and why we end up with sea creatures and the loch ness monster, they water dragons would be much harder to hunt down and kill.

Most dragon stories are based on local folklore, which inevitably through time travel to different villages and then to towns, and carried across the seas onboard ancient sailing vessels. The Chinese probably created the most diverse set of dragons, having some for the elements and some for everyday occurances. I believe that the ancient Sumarians and the like even had them.

Myths is assuming these stories are false. The Bible speaks of fire breathing dragons and the 1600's speak of the last dragons in England. The 7th century A.D. had many dragon slayers of which most were Christian.

John this is such an interesting subject. And to me its obvious that they died out more recently than popular belief dictates. There have been sightings all over the world as you say. Even flocks of pterodactyls papaw new guinea round the 1890s. Try the book Jaws claws and dinosaurs by Henry Morris.

Possibly because dinosaur fossils and other remnants of extinct life are found throughout the world.

People finding these fossils would have some knowledge of zoological anatomy, and be able to recognize that these critters were reptiles, often with big, nasty teeth, and the legends grew up around them.

Dragons breath fire and Man has been fascinated with fire since the beginning of time. Fire ushered in the main era of human civilisation...so we always want to introduce a fire-spitting monster with awesome strength to spice up our stories and catch the attention of the children.

Evolution! Creatures evolve to fit a the area.

Hence why we don't find Dragons anymore they have evolved into invisible creatures due to their environment becoming so changed thanks to Human Intervention, Intensive Farming and Pollution.

Its because they all see dragons in a different perspective.... Some think that they are dangerous. Some see them as protectors... And some see them as a little of both.......... And some can only see them as something to mount on their walls of destruction......................................
