first you want to get a case, i had a first generation ipod nano and after the first week it looked a year old, then i bought one of those cheap rubber slip on,slip off cases and i haven't got another scratch since, but for previous scratches you want to get something called brasso its a cheap oil easily availble at canadian tire or home hardware, then get a rag and pour a little on the cloth and gently rub on the back of the nano, it should get most of the scratches off.
