Elected or unelected? If the former was included, then Abraham Lincoln was a good man who felt compelled to suspend habeus corpus, declare martial law and engage in a war to keep the Republic (that he presided over) intact.

Unelected, there are several benevolent, unelected "dictators" throughout the world. The Sultan of Brunei, the Emir of the UAE, the Emir of Qatar (even though he seized control of the country in a coup d'etat while his father was vacationing in Switzerland!), for example. They may choose not to reign in the West's concept of a dictatorial style, but they are still technically dictators. They have supreme power - the "dictate" over their countrymen.

It is actually very hard to find a bad dictator. Capitalist propaganda actually paints a fictional picture of dictators. there are real political enemies that these people tend to put away but the majority of people go about their business in peace. If you go to China, say where they do not do elections, you will be very impressed at the amount of real freedom you enjoy compared to the US for instance.

I always like Caesar Augustus. I would say he was a good dictator and made the Roman Empire stronger and more unified. I used to hate Napoleon until I read about the tyranny of the so called French Republic before him.

Hitler......

What is a dictator? A dictator is a ruler whose powers are omnipotent, that is, unconstrained by external or superior law. A dictator has the power to take whatever actions he wants without concerning himself about whether they are legal. Anything the dictator does is legal because he is the law.

Hitler, had all of this and was good at it, I know he was an evil man - but a good dictator he was!

There used to be a programme on telly 'That's Life'. Every week someone would post in a mis-shapen tomato or carrot that looked a little bit like a rude body part. My how we laughed and laughed,(they don't make telly like that any more). I bet they had a good dictator on there once.

The French still revere Napoleon Bonaparte. The Liberals in this country still revere Fidel Castro and Joseph Stalin. I guess it is a matter of perception.
