Ethernet is a huge success.
The major competitor was IBM's Token Ring.
As with any proprietary system, TR failed because ethernet was cheaper. Ethernet is not perfect as it has problems with packet collisions. But any company can get the technical specs for a hub, router, or card and make one of their own.
With most proprietary solutions (of any kind) a company has to buy a "license" from the patent holder, which increases costs and decreases competition and innovation.

Ethernet is extremely successful! As with anything...it proves that you don't have to be the best. Being cheap and easy made Ethernet a big winner!
