Don't know but opium was used in medicines up to 100 years ago. The wizard of oz was written about that time.
Kids were given stuff like that all the time, and its why a lot of kids 100 years ago were so sickly growing up.

Having performed this last spring, and I played a poppy, I know. The Wicked Witch of the West put her magic on the poppies. The poppies sang beautiful music to Dorothy & company. (The music that the poppies sand is hard) so pretty much it was the music.

Poppies produce opium, which makes you sleepy. I don't think that smelling poppy flowers would really make you sleepy, though. And the ones that they show, with big beautiful flowers don't make a lot of opium, anyway.

i'm sure it was the natural scent of the poppy but the wicked witch used a poisoned fog to fall upon it to make dorithy and her friends sleep.
