IT IS not the bulb that goes dimmer, when you are not using it, but there are lamps that enable the lights to go out when no movement is detected.
they are pricey but fun as you sit reading and not moving much, and suddenly the lights go out.

There are bulbs of all different watts that Al Gore was suggesting that we use to save the environment. They are called the 8 year bulbs. They look different than the regular light bulbs. They twirl up. They are dim when they first come on and get brighter as they stay on. They are made to last about 8,000 hours. Using them in our homes helps the environment world wide. You've heard about the global warming thingy. This is part of it. The bulbs cost about $6 for two but they save you a lot of electricity in the long run. When they wear out, they just gradually go dim.
They sell them anywhere that you would buy light bulbs.

Is colour a problem? if not SOX (street lighting) or SON a bit brighter or Metal Halide really bright, or as above MBF type but all of the above need control gear and special fittings to enclose them, but all take time to reach full brightness around 1.5mins. There are some dimmer switches which "soft start" when you switch them on also some low voltage electronic tansformers soft start as well. But ive got to ask WHY?

Not a stupid question!! The new energy saving bulbs come on gradually. Alternatively you can buy dimmer switches to replace your old on/off switches!! However if you are not familiar with electrics you might need to get an electrician to come in to fit them for you!! Or alternatively you can buy/borrow a DIY book that will show you how. It is a simple enough procedure for anyone with common sese.

hi danny, dont some of the low energy one do that as standard - you know the funny shaped energy-saving ones? u could probably just go into your local DIY store like B&Q and they should be able to help you out. My friends mum has one in her house and it takes a while for it to come up to full speed - a good few mins. the first 10-20 seconds its very dim indeed - like coming in from the sun - your eyes feel a bit weird. Good luck!

I use a 'Son' sodium bulb for my driveway it starts very dim and then gets brighter after about 5 min. it consumes 70 watt and lasts for ages, it is available from Screwfix or most electrical lighting suppliers, but it need a special fitting.

Kings cross, Sydney station. There you will see a man dressed as
a chinese man. This man is not Chinese though he will claim to be.
You must approach him and say "any makes of bulbs that dim" he will answer "dim your bulb is". You say I wear women's panties on sundays". He will respond with, "you must be a bloody poofter".
You respond by saying, "how bout a go sailor boy". The bulbs will be delivered fornightly.
