Inexpensive and can be done without going to the registry- someone got me a big bag with a jug of Dreft, baby lotion, bath wash, diapers & wipes. The best most practical thing ever- she had kids and only had time to swing by Wal mart. Make sure you put it in a pretty baggie! ;) Have fun.

Diapers and wipes. You can buy a case of wipes anywhere between $5 and $8. Get baby a cute outfit that is 6 to 9 months. They grow so fast normally by 9months you have to get new stuff because they have grown out of everything else. My forth is 1 now and at every shower my sister gave my husband and I a package for the hospital. Shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, 2 travel toothbrushes, deodorant and some granola and fruit bars. All in cute cute bag that doubles for small baby bag. That was always the best gift, one less thing to pack. Good luck!

Does she have a registry? If so you can go right off that. This way you know what she asked for and needs/wants. If no registry, diapers are always a great gift. It is a big expense for new parents and also a big help when you get them. Babies grow so fast in the beginning so maybe get a size 1 or 2. This way they won't be stuck with all newborn size. Have fun shopping :)

Booties, perhaps the 0-9 month ones(they last longer). Baby powder, little plush rattles(it's nice to have more than one because they get drooled on alot and have to be washed constantly, but are soft and safe), and the mother may enjoy scrapbooking. Moms take tons of pictures of their kids. So stickers and any kind of scrapbooking goods are great gifts. Not many people think of those.

No one ever gets socks for babies, they always need socks and onesies. Onesies will cost about $6 or $7 and socks are about $3 - $6 per pack. Your not a relative (who is expected to give alot more) - they will appreciate anything from anyone. I did :)

Sleepers! I had my baby in December and no one bought me sleepers. The baby is in them most of the time and you can buy a pack of 3 for around $10 at Target.

Diapers. They're always needed, and always appreciated. Don't get newborn sized, though, cuz he'll outgrow them quick. size 1 or 2 would be good. Also, photo albums are always nice, and a disposable camera if she doesn't have a digital one already.
