Depends on how big it is. We had a similar problem. broken trash can was left yet they took a perfectly good bucket, go figure. I wrote 'trash' in big red letters and they still didn't take it so I put it inside another trash can. Hope this helps

If it's metal or plastic throw it in the "recyclable" public trash dumpster.
If it's wood the ordinary dumpster would do.

write the word trash on it..or try to catch them and tell them.

Since most garbage cans are made out of either heavy plastic or aluminum, you need to bring it to a recycling yard.

I put a big sign on the can with large magic marker words that read: "Please take this as trash" - always works

Place it in an extra large leaf bag. This seems to work for me.
