Thanks to all for your thoughts on this one.
I have a dyson dc04, it works eventually, but its backbreaking to get carpets really clean and hair free. I was just wondering if anyone had found an extra special, superb cleaner for short dog hairs, as I need a new one soon.
My DC04 has bee superb with everything over the last 9 years, parts were easy to get, it coped with mess from building an extension easily, just the dog hairs!!
I'll look into the Oreck (in UK), I think we had a salesman call once many years ago to demonstrate one, very expensive.

I have an Oreck, and I'm not pleased with how it works on pet hair. I've had to get it fixed several times. I'll check out the Dyson.

Try a comb called "The Furminator." It's very expensive, but it does a great job of getting rid of the undercoat that pets shed.

Here is a link to Dyson's most powerful vacuum for pet hair:

For loose pet hairs on a hardwood or tile floor, a duster is best. A static attractive duster is best of all.

For carpetting, any vacuum cleaner that has a beater brush would work better than one without. The beater brush actually helps pull the pet hairs out of the carpetting.

For getting pet hair out of furniture cushions and off clothing, I have found that the pet sponge is actually the best item to use. You rub it dry over the cushion or the clothing, and the pet hair collects in a rolled tube which you then just pick right off and deposit in the trash. These are available at most pet stores and at department stores such as WalMart.

If you want to go to the extent of a Dyson vacuum cleaner, then get the original large yellow one. It is the only one that will pick up cat hair satisfactorily. The smaller succeeding generations of this machine just don't work as well.

Not sure what brand is best, but if you take a fabric softener sheet (the kind that you put in the dryer) and rub it on the couch before you vacuum, the hair comes up much easier.
