I do NOT want to write about typical issues presented in the media (land claims, addiction issues, residential schools). While these things are crucial to be studied, everyone else will be writing on those topics and I'd like something more original.

There's been some really interesting work done by people like Susan Phillips and Barbara Rogoff about learning norms fostered by Native communities--things like observing instead of immediately asking for the answer, preferring group work rather than directly responding to the teacher, etc.

If you look up one of those authors (Susan Phillips would have something about the Warm Springs community, and Rogoff writes on this idea of "intent participation"), you should have a good idea of some of the issues in Native education.

For the paper, you could report on this work--how it got started, who the major researchers are, and what's being done now--or you could write about why it's important that we understand the leearning styles of the native community, and what that adds to our understanding of learning and education more generally. (It's really enlightening to me to look at how Native kids learn, because it makes you look at typical white middle-class schools in a whole different way by contrast.)

How about studying intergenerational trauma. How events of the past affect Native people today.

Or you could study contemporary programs that use traditional healing methods (like sweatlodges in prisons and for drug/alcohol rehab.) and their effectiveness. There is actually one place in Canada that is using a traditional healing model and they have a very low recidivism rate, the program is working wonderfully.

You could also study the horrible land bridge theory. Read "Red Earth White Lies" by Vine Deloria Jr. (A Native person). There is SO much evidence to refute this theory. And it has a lot to do with anthropology.
