If you measure a mountain from it's base, the tallest is not Mount Everest; it is the Island of Hawaii, which is all mountain. Hawii's topmost peak, Mauna Kea, is 13,784 feet above sea level, but it rises from a sea bottom that is 18,000 feet below sea level. From base to peak, it's height is over 31,000 feet. Mount Everest's peak is 29,000 feet above sea level, but it rises only 17,000 feet from a plateau that is itself 12,000 feet high.

Mount Everest is a foot high today than last century, and it may be growing at an accelerating rate.

Mountains are measured from sea level so Mt Everest is the correct answer. If you want to change the rules to include Mauna Kea then you also have to include a South American mountain, Chimborazo, in the Andes. The top of the mountain is the furthest point from the centre of the Earth because of the bulge around the equator so it is the tallest.

You give me Mauna Kea, I'll give you Chimborazo. Let's go back to the standard definition and agree on Everest.

Well, there are TWO ~!!!!!!

The biggest mountain above land is Mt. Everest, and the biggest mountain is Mauna Loa in Hawaii. This is because it is a shield volcano, and so the mountain starts at the bottom of the ocean, and rises above the sea quite high.
