You really don't need a lot of them, I have tons, as I beleived I would need them, but no, I never use them. A bib is just as easy to wipe up spit, whats the point of buying so many blankets, I mean look at the size of them, how many times are you going to use the same blanket to wipe up spit? A bib is smaller, wipe up some spit and toss in wash.
You can buy some burp pads if your really concerned about getting spit up on, but then again its not really necessary.

Because newborns spit up, poop, and pee A LOT! You'll need a lot to make sure you always have some clean. Don't buy a lot yourself, though, because EVERYONE and their brother will be getting them for you, too. You probably need about 10-15 of them. When my daughter was born, it seemed like that's what everyone got us. I would've been happier with packs of diapers! Now I'm 38 weeks pregnant, and we still have all of the blankets from our daughter, and people are buying us even more! It's crazy!

I have tons and use maybe 2 a week and they get washed every 3 days or so..You know what's really good is the blankets the hospital wraps baby in...take a few of those. I was given 3 and I use them for swaddling, burp clothes or to lay her down for a changing....good luck!!

The main reason is for swaddling from what I understand. My daughter is almost 3 months and she has hated to be swaddled from the time she was about a week old. So I use them as bibs/burp cloths for the most part. I also use them to cover her up when she falls asleep in her swing, to lay on for tummy time, etc. I have 12 or so of them and still end up washing them almost every day! I've been thinking about getting a few more.

I have a 21 month old son and a 9 month old son. I didnt use recieving blankets. Just baby blankets to keep them warm and such. You can use burp clothes to clean up spit. Good luck and Congrats!

Receiving blankets have many uses. You can use it to throw over the baby as you are breast feeding-covers you but it is not too warm. You can use it to lightly cover the baby when he/she is sleeping. You can use it for the baby to lay on when you are visiting someone. We often used receiving blankets to swaddle the baby with.
They are inexpensive and easy to wash---just handy to have around.

Babies leak constantly - and receiving blankets are great for wiping up, or for putting on your shoulder to protect your clothes.
Add a couple pins, and they make a fine make-shift diaper.
They are light-weight and the perfect size for swaddling.

For burping your baby, possible spit-ups....there will be many, drool, wiping up milk on face, keeping baby warm, protecting your or other people's clothes, under the neck while feeding baby...and you will use many through out the day.

they're used for everything. swaddling, cleaning up spit and milk, wiping up stuff you spill on yourself, covering stains on your shoulders from the baby =), laying down for an impromtu changing session, sometimes babys poop and pee out of their diapers and these can be used easily. they are cheap and easy to clean but you go through a lot of cleaning up so theyre good to have. my son still uses his "snuggle" at night...different one depending on whats clean but he just holds it by his face. theyre a good investment.

They get dirty fast when babies are little. Spit ups, leaky diapers, etc. This way you won't have to wash them so often, you'll have extra's. Plus they are nice for tummy time too.
