Madison, was important, but I think three outshine the rest. Sam Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin were the three most influential in the Declaration of Independence. Adams and Franklin had to talk Jefferson into writing it. At first, he thought it wasn't a good idea. He was the best wordsmith, so they finally talked him into it.

I don't think there was one I would single out as the best. Each had unique qualities that were better than the others.
No one could have led the Continental Army better than George Washington
No one could write as well as Thomas Jefferson. He was a genius.
John Adams added zeal and briliance of ideas.
Benjamin Franklin contributed wisdom and experience. As a scientist he could offer a different prospective than others.
John Hancock on parleamentry procedure.

Madison and then Jefferson and then Washington and then Franklin, come to think of it, most of them were great intellects. We could use a few like them today.
Madison at his best:

I gotta go with William H Taft, if you want to consider him a founding father. Every time I had to do a report on a president in school, I chose Taft. And not just because he was the fattest president. He also tried to do that Canadian tariff thing.
