In 1898 it was ceded to the US after the Spanish-American war. Then, in 1918, it became a Commonwealth. Puerto Ricans are American by birth, and have been sine 1898. We are as much American as anyone else. We speak primarily Spanish, but some English too. Being half Puerto Rican, I speak from experience.
