I suggest you get Stephen Kings' audio book, Blood and Smoke. In these series of short stories, he has several suggestions for quitting tobacco products. You will find that his suggestions can be quite effective.
Good Luck!

There is no easy way to quit smoking. You can only quit when you set it in your mind that you are going to quit. Nicotine is the most addictive drug there is.
When you smoke, the nicotine in cigarettes has an effect on your brain. It also causes you to want more cigarettes. But that's not the only reason why you may continue to smoke. For most people, smoking becomes part of a daily routine. It's a behavior you become used to.
The best way to quit is to first ask yourself why do you want to quit, money, health, loved ones etc...Tell everyone you are going to quit so you can build a support team. Set a date, Throw out everything that reminds you of smoking figure out what you are going to do when you get withdrawls because you will get them. You have to get your mind off of tobacco, know your triggers what makes you want to smoke.Tell your friends that smoke that you don't want them smoking around you. Drink lots of water don't drink alcohol or cafeene. Enroll in support group classes I believe the american red cross has them and they are free and I believe they still offer your first medical treatment free like patches, gum etc.. Take something like gum or patches to reduce the cravings. you can also get perscription drugs from your doctor. You also have to think of yourself as a non smoker. Another good thing is to stop doing things that you did as a smoker like if you smoke when you go to a bar stop going to a bar. It is very difficult but it is possible to quit.

There is no easy way. On the chemical side, the nicotine addiction can be beat in about 2 to 5 days cold turkey. You will get residual cravings as the nicotine that is deposited in fat cells in your body break down. You can reduce this time by taking herbs that help clean out your blood, like red clover. Check with a health store for these.
On the habitual side, the oral fixation to smoking or chewing needs to be beaten too. Chewing tends to have a stronger oral fixation than smoking. To beat the oral fixation, try an herbal snuff such as Hooch Snuff (http://www.hoochsnuff.com/). It feels like tobacco and can help. Try gum or chewing on a straw for smoking.

if you want to try my homemade concoction, go for it.
how many cigs do you smoke a day? start out maintaining your average number, and then every few days knock JUST ONE smoke off your allotted amount. eventually you will be smoking just one or two cigs and it's easy to quit after that.
do the same thing with chewing tobacco.
it's cheap to try this program even if it doesn't work for you.
also, remember, that even if you try and fail it's better than not trying at all. statistically, if you've tried to quit you have better odds of actually quitting in the future.

Eating licorice or drinking spearmint tea curbs the craving for smoking. However, I have tried these and they do work, but if you don't have your mind set that you really want to quit than these will not work because you will forego these alternatives and smoke. I know, they work, but when I wanted a cigarette I stopped with the alternatives. Mind power has a lot to do with it also.

It's not easy at all, especially for people who chew. Tell him to go get the gum - he can use it just like dip (parking it under his lip), but it won't rot his mouth out, and it's a lot easier to wean off than chew.

if you want to do it without nicotine aids. chew gum. chamomille tea helps addiction 'pains' too. cold turkey hurts but it is the most effective if you can keep it up for a cpl weeks, then your body starts to adjust. chewing gum or something will help with the fixation of the habbit. work out more often, that helps too

You just have to want to quit, that's all there is to it. All the Med.'s and patches and books in the world won't help.
