The only anti-viral herbs that i can point you toward are oregano and basil. There is a product out there called SAMBUCOL which is made from elderberries which are said to be anti-viral and anti-bacterial. With a cold though prevention is more the key. You can supplement with acidopholus and garlic. L-acidopholus helps to keep a balance between the good and bad bacteria in the body and the garlic is a natural antibiotic and is good for so many other things. Vitamin C and echinacea will both help relieve the toll that your body will take from a cold when you eventually get it if at all (for example a week long cold for someone else might only be two days for you). Goldenseal also fits into this category and often times you can find them coupled together in the same product.

Vitamin C and garlic are both antiviral and antibacterial. Echinacea helps fight bacteria. Vitamin E is supposed to help the immune system in general. Those are just a few...there are a lot of choices here, and it's hard to pick a "best." I'm sorry I don't have a good answer, but the field is wide open. I guess any multivitamin (to make sure you have the basics) plus whatever herbs you may like. Italian spices are generally a good idea to add to your food, if you cook your own. The important thing is to find something that has helped others and that you can get down without gagging. Enjoy yourself, because everyone agrees that stress tends to be detrimental to your health.

Notice that I included both the official remedy of vitamins and the alternative of herbs. Personally, I think both sides have a point. Don't believe everything you hear, from either side. The first answerer seems very trusting in standardized medicine, but vitamin C does, in fact, help shorten colds (rhinovirus) despite the "fact" that there is no cure for a virus. There are also a few scam artists and incorrect beliefs if you go looking for alternative therapies, so it's pick-and-choose as far as finding what is best and most effective for you.

there is no anti viral because there is no cure for viruses (only prevention called vaccines). To prevent colds take vitamin C. It can reduce the length of a cold by 40%.
Anti bacterials are only available as medication from a doctor.
