We need a brake usually means that things are moving faster than she wanted them to and she really needs to put the brakes on and figure out where to go from here.
Sometimes it means, she's had enough and needs to break it off completely for a while.
Depends on her body movements and tone of voice when she said it.

We need a brake for the bike or the car or even motorcycle.
We need a break away from each other. Too much in each other's pockets.
We need a break away from the routine - take time out etc. - have a holiday.
You could ask 'a brake for what' or 'a break from what' to clarify what the person meant.

Maybe the car needs a new brake
or
Maybe if someone said they need a break they might need a bit of space with no calls and contact for a while to make sure your relationship is still worth continuing with

Well, it could mean that the person who told you that wants to see other people, but wants to keep you around to fall back on in case their other relationship doesn't work out. Or maybe you argue and fight too much and maybe you just need a break from one another. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Maybe they don't want to break up and they are trying to ease tension that may be in the relationship.

You mean "we need a BREAK".
If this question is in the context of a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship, then the person saying it is desiring to terminate the relationship.
If this is in the context of a working environment, then the person wants a vacation badly.
Finally, the person may be asking for a favor from someone.
Hopefully, one of these definitions will fit your particular situation.

most people say we need a break when they like you and dont want to hurt your feelings but what they really mean is its over were better off apart if your partner has asked for a break ask them for a reason and see if it really is only a break dont waste your life hanging around plenty more fish in the sea but if your partner has a reason and they do love you and want to get back stop seeing each other for awhile and see how you feel

if you are married that shouldn't happen because there are other answers like couples counseling and you have to work sometimes to make a relationship work also if you are in a gf bf relationship if you both want to really be together then maybe you should try communicating and asking each other what is going on and why they want to take a break.

Well....it doesn't only mean one thing. If someone tells you that, ask them about it. For some people, it means that they don't want to be with you anymore. For others, they've just become too deeply involved with you and they need a while to clear their head. And for others....it just means you spend too much time together.
