That when you start getting involved with the Internet, you seem to stop learning?

I mean conversing with people is fine and there is a certain exchange, but at a certain point the chit-chatting has a way of stealing away time when you could be studying or reading.

Well, I'll try not to be offended by that. I have found the Internet to be a good learning tool. Sure it has it's brain dead parts, but avoid those and you are laughing.

It is certainly a step up from watching television.

However, I do not think I replaces old fashioned study with books. And importantly "wrote" memory work cannot be done on a computer.

There are ways the net can enhance book work, if done properly. For example a very well organized online testing schema, tied to a text book, can give instant feed back while studying, and allow motivated students to fly through material as fast as they want, without being tied to the normal course schedule.

So in this way, it is a good tool.

It also puts high quality access all over the world instantly, and somewhat cheaply, which is good.

So, in conclusion; NO. the Internet does not stop you from learning, it is your own procrastination. If you should be doing Chemistry, get off the computer.

No, I do not agree. I have learned a lot on the internet, and a lot here, on Answers!. Books are available to me, I love to read. thank you Mom. for teaching me early in life. But I use the internet, too, to learn. Many good articles, some taken directly from a book, even a great dictionary is available, Wikapedia is great. I can go to sites sponsored by people of learning, people in the business of the topic.
I learn facts and figures on answers, but I also learn about human nature. I learn what is the current thinking on any given topic, I learn how people express themselves, I learn about computor culture. All types, kinds, and ages come here.
Sometimes I do chit chat, but most of the time, I'm handing out my knowledge and opinions, and listening to others do the same.
I have my study for the day out, just behind me. It is learn how to use my new beeper. the instructions are a booklet. Later, I will communicate with my health insurance company, and learn how to do my own health assessment. I will do that online.
