The first law of nature is Self preservation. Humans are broken we are selfish. We are driven by the avoidance of pain and seek pleasure. None of us can be truly alturistic. We do things for other people because it makes us feel good. This is the way that we are evolved (created). I am being careful here since this is Philosophy not Religion. People are selfish as a means of adapting to the world and survival. When we hear a tragic story about someone else we all think that could have been me and have a sigh of relief. That is the first reaction. There is hope for us though but again I may be in the wrong forum.

My opinion at the age of 56 and being a recently retired elem teacher and dealing with tons of kids and parents and watching the years go by, is that a large part of this selfishness is actually created by the world we live in. Everything is so instant now, cell phones, and all that technology gets you almost everything you want at your fingertips. If you are of the younger generation, think on just this one change. I was born in 1950. When I was a teenager and wanted to talk on the phone with friends or boyfriends, I had to talk on a phone connected to the wall usually in the kitchen where the entire family heard everything I said. Now consider the restrictions on what you can say and now you can take your cell phone, be alone and say anything you want. I don't necessarily think lack of parental guidance here is that good, there are pedophiles and all kinds of people who now have access to these young uns without parental protection. Everything is at your finger tips and it has caused people to often be run by greed and self intent.

ME, ME, ME, I, I, I,. Yes life is too short to to be selfish. Thank God for those who are Generous! Oh hey, ya, I am guilty of this at sometime in my life, but it just didn't make sense to me. Low an behold I have been guilty in terms of being "too nice", and very generous, when it came to materialistic things, like money, gifts, clothes, you name it, if you liked something of mine it was yours.
This has changed now, I sadly saw how ungrateful people can be.Some, just wanted it, and that was it. What's crazy, is I didn't give things to be liked, I just thought they needed it more than me. I have managed to balance this out.
Fear of being with-out, causes some people to be selfish, and then Greed sets in. That's just the way life is. Temptation to want more and more, is just flat out stupid to me. How much can a person really need, would be the next question. Whether it be a new gadget or just to be in control of another person. etc.
Hope this makes sense to you.

The judgment that someone is selfish is an artificial template used by society to force the individual to sacrifice for the good of all. Thus the individual feels mandated to serve instead of being free to choose. This results in a further twisted attempt to regain personal sovereignty. Expecting others to give does not teach them to give freely. It only teaches them that others have expectations of them and they will be called names if they choose outside of the prescribed construct.
