You've heard it before, but the best things in life are free. You're both skint, so you both know the score. Go for a walk, show him the sights, go for a coffee, watch a game on the telly, enjoy each other's company, talk about old times and have a laugh.

Go to the museums in Kensington. You have the Science, Natural History and the V&A. They are all quite wonderful and the science museum is particularly great unless you are a whiz engineer or scientist.
The Imperial War Museum is interesting as is the museum of the Moving Image at Waterloo. Try the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London and the Tower. Walk around the real tourist sites, Horseguards Parade, Buckinham Palace, Trafalgar Square etc.

Not to be nosy, but noting what major city is within driving distance might be helpful. Otherwise, look for a coffee shop with a late night jam session, spend $3 a piece on a cup of coffee, sit back, play some checkers, talk about everything, and chill out. That's what I do for fun, because it seems like I'm broke all the time too.

What city?
local sites see's all free ,if its London free is easy get a tube ticket and visit Harrods for nosey and look about london bridge ,picadilly circus etc i don't even live in England but have been to London and don't need to spend money to look at these places bring a packed lunch and sit in a park lol.
If its just one day you probably will want to natter and even in the house would be fine for a mate few drinks and few laughs and not tiring yourself out.

A tour bus !! they last for ages and are kinda cheap...
The theatre - get cheap seats..
Or get a sign saying ' students with no money for activities' and sit outside the venue you would like to enter or better still the pub and wait for donations from passers by...!!!
Anyhow, you know you're just going to sit in the pub and drink your overdraft...... have fun!!

you can go just for a walk in the cit... do you really have to see any events? i think you will have so many things to say that the day will pass very quickly and it's not necessary to go to sightseeings... believe me. Good luck! i hope my suggestion will be helpful...
