Completely...they will argue this forever but they did change. They weren't as raw, angry & politically outspoken as they were with Master, Ride & Kill em' all. Nevermind the fact that their looks into anchient dogmas & folklore became almost non-existant. (eg. Creeping Death, Four Horsemen, Leper Messiah etc etc)
I miss the old raw Metallica but I know that they can never go back. Yes they changed but perhaps it was their way of growing up. Yes everything after the Justice album seemed to deal in psychoanalysis, being on the road and dream therapy but I guess that is what they know now.
I have been a huge Metallica fan since Kill 'Em All first came out but since watching "Some Kind of Monster" I was almost disillusioned with them....my remedy...I went for a long drive, cranked up Kill 'Em All and remembered the band I grew up with.
Cheers dude for letting me know what I am doing today...road trip with the classics!!

Absolutely, but all bands change with time. They've turned more commercial. I love Master of Puppets, but then again, I love the black album....which is totally commercial, but you have to admit it's a damn good album. Comparing old Metallica and new Metallica is like comparing Orange Juice and Apple Juice. Both are good, but some people will like one over the other.
If you think about it...it really all started changing with "One". I remember that they had never done a video before that. They wanted to go more mainstream....reach more fans...make more money. I don't consider it selling out at all.
I'm 35 now and it's funny that I've been listening to them since I was in 6th grade.

Of course!
Because they have lost Cliff Burton, who had a large influence on their first 3 albums (all time masterpieces).
And even you could notice Cliff 's influence after his death,
I mean in ''And justice for all'!
After the Black Album they changed a lot, I don't want to say that they sold out, or...'cause for me they're are Always Awsome!
(In fact Metallica's Ride the lightning, Master of Puppets & Justice album were all heavily inspired by ''H.P Lovecraft'' 's stories...
& Cliff was who got the entire band into Lovecraft's works!
That's why those albums are different than the newer ones...& they still Rock!)

I believe metallica has changed a lot since they first started. Whether its for the better or worse, no one can really say that. They're still successful and sell out arenas so they must be doing something right. If you listen to them enough, even if you don't know their cd's, you can pretty much tell which songs came from which cd. Each cd they release is a little different than the one before it. I like how they have evolved like that instead of trying to pound out the same sounding songs on every cd.

Mucis has evolved, tastes have gradually adapted to new sounds and mixed styles. For the classic rock enthusiasts, Metallica won't change if you still listen to their old albums (great music) but that's the way music is, it changes regardless if you're a die hard musician or not.
For example, one of the biggest band ever : U2, try and compare what they used to do in the 80's and now. It was new-wave english pop at the time and now it's more of a contemporary electronica rock. They still sound great, but the listeners adapted to different style.
When I hear what Guns And Roses sounded like at the time and what Axl Rose sounds like now, yes I can agree with you, besides his voice nothing is as good anymore.
But Metallica is Metallica.

I agree, I used to love those guys. Went to their concerts every year. I drooled over Jason Newsted, too bad he's gay.
I still like Lars Ulrich, Robert Trujillo, and James Hetfield.
Last time I saw them was in Northern California at the Ozz Fest
although, I had to admit, Linkin Park, Korn, and Marylin Mason weren't too bad.
Metallica ROCKED back then. Master of Puppets rules!

LOL. Honey, Master of Puppets was over 20 years ago... If they haven't changed since then, I don't know whats going to happen.. I mean, I am 20 years old, and I have changed DRASTICALLY in the last 20 years.
I believe they are going to re-visit a bit of that love they had back then on their new album.
Just my opinion.

Everything up to "Justice" was great. I accepted "Black" album as a decent foray into mainstream, but kinda lost interest by "Load" and beyond. S&M was all right, but mostly due to the pairing of the symphony with Metallica's older works.

No, and it makes me sad to hear what Metallica plays these days, their last good album was "And justice for all". After that I only hear from them ( If i ever do ) commercial mumble jumble.
Really dissapointing, THE band converted into one more of the sheep.

When Cliff Burton died, the music started to deteriorate into the garbage that it is today. They had some decent stuff after Burton's death but nothing great. Remember Garage Days was a record of covers.
