I didn't realize that I needed a visa for just a few hours layover in Lagos to catch my flight to South Africa. Now I am in another African country and the Nigerian embassy here says since I am a U.S. national they can't give me a transit visa here! Help!!!

You need to contact the United States Embassy in Nigeria and explain your situation to them. They will be able to help you. Here is the information:

The first answer will be very helpful.
Next time,get a transit visa if you will not use a direct flight.Some countries don't require it but it is convenient you get one.After all,it doesn't cost much and it is easy to a acquire
