i have tried running everything...defrag, cleanup, antivirus/spyware, everything. i also have high speed internet. when i click on the icon, it takes about 2 minutes to open, then clicking any links that open in a new window take about the same time. you can't close the window when it is working either.

Depends on many things, one is the speed of your Internet. Dial-up, Cable or DSL all have different speeds and IE has to wait on Information to load.
If, you talk of it launching I not real sure on that one. May do a Scan Disk and Defrag and see if it help.
Also, check how much RAM you have. IF, it got Visa odds are it may need some more memory.
Also, try FireFox or Opera below, once you learn one or the other you forget IE.

Me too, I have been looking into this and it is either the Processor or a lack of memory. Make sure you run all spyware and clean out your machine, then check your task manger (CTRL ALT DEL) to see the running Processes and CPU usage. You should show some available memory. If not thats the problem. Buy more!! If you are running Mcafee that may be the culprit. I would advise going to PC Pitstop and running their free utility that shows your computers stats as compared to others like it. Once you find the culprit, (Probably a process or startup item) things should load much faster.
