It's one of my favorite movies but I've never understood what the title means. Perhaps it's obvious but I still missed it somehow.

Quoting IMDB:

'"Crouching tiger hidden dragon" is a quote from Chinese mythology. It refers to hiding your strength from others; advice which is followed too well by the characters in the film.'

And quoting Wikipedia:

'The title Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (臥虎藏龍) derives from a Chinese saying that advises one to conceal one's strengths from others in order to preserve the element of surprise. It also references two of the characters: Jen's Mandarin name, Jiāo Lóng, means "dragon", and Lo's name Xiǎo Hǔ means "tiger".'

Unless you understand the Chinese mythic culture and how metaphoric symbolism works, forget trying to figure that out...too much gets lost in translation.

It is worth noting though one of the most beautiful love songs ever written:
"A Love Before Time" ...
the song at the end of the movie sung by Coco Lee.
