It would have to be a power hitter with a good batting average.
Given the choice of two, pick the player that stands out the most among the other choices at his position.

Of course, if you are in one of my leagues, I think that you should go for the best gloves over the best hitters! ;-)

Take position players early and keep in mind the positions that are very weak after the top 5 or so like SS and 3rd base. Those are positions where if you dont get one of the top 5 you are giving away numbers daily to the guys wise enough to fill those spots early (but NEVER,NEVER reach for a player, he is ranked where he is for a reason). Pitching is far to easy to fill late in a draft, i won 6 of 8 Yahoo leagues last year and never picked a starting pitcher before the 9th round (3rd & 4th in the other 2 fantasy leagues). Got starting pitchers like Verlander, Liriano, Chris Young, Matt Cain, Josh Johnson, Annibel Sanchez, Wang, Bedard, Jered Weaver, Ervin Santana, papelbon, etc. either very late in the drafts or as free agent pickups. Do your homework, there are a lot of really good pitching possibilities that are ranked below the top 125 players (that equals the 10th round in a standard 12 team league). Draft 2 top RPs during the early rounds (4th-7th) and then wait on this years emerging RPs (like Saito,Gonzalez, Papelbon, JJ Putz and others did last year...guys emerge every season just make sure you snatch them early). And last, make sure to avoid injury risk players, one dimensional base stealers(Podsednik, etc) and power hitters with low averages....bad averages will kill you more that 25-30 HRs will help.

Pitchers are always ridiculously inconsistent. You really cannot count on to reflect past performance. Check Peavy, Colon, Felix. Furthermore, there will always be gems that appear later in the season such as Jered Weaver. The only pitcher I would take top 5 would be Santana. He is a machine that is the model of consistency. The rest of my top 5 would probably be Pujols, Reyes, Soriano, and Howard.

I would go with a position player, but that's mainly because I'm not big on pitching.

6 starts per week (position player) vs 1 (pitcher)... The 6 just sounds more appealing to me, I guess.

a top 5 pick on a pitcher is a waste of a great pick. Pick up a position player who gets you stats all week long.

Position players easily, they play every day, at best you get two starts out of a stud pitcher in a week, normally one. Pitchers also get injured far more often and are easier to find on the waiver wire.

Pitching wins championships, but rarely fantasy. NEVER pick a pitcher in the first round. It is much too easy to find a good pitcher later, not so with a strong batter.

Top 6: Pujols, A-Rod, Reyes, Howard, Soriano, Utley

It depends who has been taken. Ideally the top 3 is:

1 Pujols
2 Soriano
3 Johan Santana

If Santana is gone take a position player. If Santana is there and Pujols/Soriano are gone, take him.

Take pitcher if a top starter is available. I take pitchers early, then postion players. One thing to keep in mind in a draft is; don't end a run on players, but start one (ie... break players down into tiers, by postions, top tier... 2nd tier, etc..., that'll help you determine values of the players)

i would take a position player, no brainer, because pitchers pitchers pitch every 3 days, not like position players who play every day.
