Google or Yahoo search on the term "causes of poverty", wikipedia may also have an article or two. Go to your library and see if you can get a librarian to help, I would think they would enjoy helping you.
I'm no authority but to take a stab, I think that you will find out that malevolent concentration of power and political corruption are the culprits.

The causes are the same everywhere: lack of education and marketable skills, chronic illnesses including mental illnesses, discrimination based on gender, caste (or social class) and race/ethnicity....
It's all fine and good to read an article or a book about it but why not see the problem up close for yourself? Call up your local Red Cross, Salvation Army or homeless shelter and volunteer your services for a day (Saturday or Sunday). Interview the staff who work there for the backgrounds of some of the poor people or better yet, get permission to talk to the clients themselves. Learn their own stories on how they become poor and destitude.
Your research paper will be so much better than those from your fellow classsmates who only write what they learn from books. You may get a very high grade (mark) for your originality and industry...

I will sum it up even more for you. The root of poverty lies with poor education (or none at all). Every study done in the U.S. has shown a correlation between poor neighborhoods and low reading/writing skills. It's no secret that if a child had a good education, they wouldn't be stuck in the projects their whole lives. But unfortunately, our educational system is broken and there are no resources for these struggling schools to improve their classrooms.

Corrupt leaders (example, most all of Africa)
Despotic, stubborn, delusional, communist leaders (Example, North Korea). North Korea is a good example, because you can eliminate almost every variable such as race, geography, culture, history, religion, etc when you compare North Korea to South Korea. N. Korea is one of the poorest countries in the world. People even have to eat grass to live, and beg other countries for free money and rice. But South Korea is thriving and one of the richest countries in Asia. They are the same people ! The difference is the leader's communist iron-fisted stubborn form of government in the north.

In the West Bank many people started to live below the line of poverty because Israel, USA and Europe has stopped funds. Moreover, before this boycott from USA to the Palestinians, Israel has many policies to destroy the Palestinian economy, such as:
1) Palestinian merchants, especially in Jerusalm have to pay high taxes for Israel. Many Palestinian people pay Israel money annually just to keep their house safe from Israeli destruction.
2) From 2000-NOW, Israel has cut more that 1,200,000 trees in the West Bank. Most of them are olive trees which many villagers depend on to gain their living.
3) Israeli barriers in the West Bank and Gaza prevent people from going to work, for example, in the year 2003, In Bethlehem the employees hadn't gone to work for 180 days out of 300 because of barriers and curfews.
4) Israel has destroyed many shops in the West Bank and Gaza. And the wall is doing a good job, it has paralyzed our economy. I know Palestinian people who used to make about 40,000 $ minimum each year by selling olive oil, now after they lost their trees they just have to buy oil.
About other countries in the world, I think that beside each poor family there is a very rich family. Beside each luxurious villa there is a hut. Beside each poor person who can bearly use transportation there is a man driving a fancy Mercedes!
