Hi There!

This is an easy question with a big answer.

The odometer in that vehicle is electronically driven. There is a little step motor that drives two gears which drive the odometer and trip odometer. The step motor can go bad. The gears can go bad. The main odometer or trip odometer can get bound up and go bad.

This Odometer and trip odometer with step motor is usually replaced as one unit. If i repaired the unit; I would charge you $150.00 for repair and $50.00 for labor. The parts i would use would be brand new.I would also set the correct mileage and give two year warranty.

You could also go down to junkyard. Prices range here from $50.00 at pick n pull to $100.00. The mileage would need to be reset. The unit may be bad since it is used. The warranty is usually 30 days.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

88 was the first year of the electronic speedo on GM trucks. The odometer in your truck is driven by a servo motor in the speedometer housing itself. There is no mechanical link from the transmission to the speedometer. You best bet is replace the speedometer as an assembly. If you are lucky you might find one in a salvage yard with close to your mileage, if not make a note of mileage on the old speedo when removed and the new speedo when installed and put this note with your vehicle title.

the gears that turn the odometer are worn out. they are only made of plastic and depending how many miles are on the truck don't last forever. the only way to fix it is to replace the whole speedometer as it comes in 1 whole unit and you cant just buy parts for it.

remove speedo cable from tranny, remove small bolt where cable was, then remove adapeter from tranny,it will pull out, make take a small screwdriver to get it out, thier is a small plastic gear in the part you pull out.look at this gear very close, just a litte wear will cause this problem, make sure to count the teeth on this gear, take this gear with you to GM,they need the color.then replace, this should fix your problem,it's not the speedo it's self. good luck
