It's not just you. I saw it based on my best girlfriend's recommendation and several good reviews and found some of it funny, some of it pathetic (not a criticism; I'm talking about those beauty pageant contestants -- I'm still trying to figure out whether they were real competitors who auditioned for the movie or very good child actors) and quite a bit of it stereotyped (particularly the grandfather and the gay brother).
That said, I loved the little girl (whose name momentarily escapes me!) especially when she did her typical little girl dance number at the beauty pageant.
I think the rave reviews may be an indication of how few and far between all the torture, slasher, horror, action blockbuster, computer generated special effects movies any kind of "normal", character-driven movie appears in so-called mainstream movie theaters. There are all sorts of incredible films out here (just read this year's Oscar nominations for foreign film, for example) but most are relegated to the "art cinema" circuit. Too bad!

The only reason it had such a bing deal made over it was because of the gay story lines in it.
If people had said what they really thought they would have been labeled as homophobic.
The movie wasn't THAT good.

It was okay - but I like Greg. It was way overrated, though - in my opinion.
