Money will be the biggest issue.
Unless they can find a way to sign their young players to long term contracts for cheap, and we know that won't happen, a dynasty is not happening.
Once Crosby becomes an RFA, which I believe is after next season, if Pittsburgh can't come to an agreement with him on a long term contract don't be surprised if another team extends a contract offer. Losing 5 first round draft picks for a player like Crosby would be well worth it.
If they can sign Crosby, Staal and Malkin to long term contracts, by the time they're 25 they'll be able to test the waters as UFA and free to talk to other teams for way more money than what Pittsburgh can offer them.

Crosby. Malkin. Stall. Whitney. Fleury. Armstrong. Malone.
Christianson. Recchi. Gonchar. Eaton. Nasreddine.
Players in the Minors like: Welch. Penner. Letang.
Great role players. Good mgmt. And tough when they want to be - Petrovicky, Ruuto, Orpik.
Hottest team since the allstar break. No accident - ask the devils, preds... .
This is how Dynasties are made. They will stay in Pittsburgh and keep this team together for approx 5 years. Yeah, this is a dynasty in the making.

If they can hold on to their key players (Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Fluery), its possible. In agreement with everyone else though, they need defense and they need to find a way to fit under the salary cap. The problem the Pens are going to have in the next couple years is keeping their big guns on a reasonable salary. Therrian would also have to be a mainstay in my opinion. His coaching has created a team that supports itself and works hard in the corners. If Noah Welch and Mark Eaton continue their development as defensive defenseman, they'll be vital to the teams future. Gonchar and Whitney carry firepower, but don't do too much defensively. Whitney makes a lot of sloppy plays at the Pens blueline and has cost the team games. You can say the same thing for Orpik. If Shero can trade for or draft a smart defenseman, Pittsburgh will have what it's lacking, support for Marc-Andre Fluery. It's just tough to keep a team like that under the salary cap.

Joel: How dare you study the Oilers dynasty to the Penguins. They nevertheless lack Anderson, Kurri, Tikkanen, Lowe they won't be a dynasty because of the fact 3 sturdy gamers do no longer make a dynasty group, A group of sturdy gamers does (see Detroit)

Pittsburgh is great and extremely hot right now. They need a few more great players though. And they're not consistently great, they are streaky and streaky is not a good thing. They keep giving up their leads and almost got another New Jersey Devils upset last night, but they held it. They can't keep continuing to bring it to OT and hope to win there. They need better defense and then maybe they could become a dynasty.

Yes, they have a good young team (excluding Recchi, age 38) in Crosby, Malkin, Malone, Fleury, Staal, Ruutu, and Orpik. They are currently 4th in the East (technically should be 3rd, they are beating Atlanta in points). Crosby and Malkin will probably combine for about 4 awards in the regular season, and in the postseason Crosby will no doubt earn MVP honors regardless if the Pens win or not. I say they will win the Cup over San Jose, but only time will tell.

Well, not at the moment. I am a huge Pens fan and I think that if they want to be a dynasty they would have to put some good defenseman in front of Marc Andre-Fluery. They already outscore teams imagine if they got some defense. They would win every game like 4 to 1.

You can't even begin to think about dynasty status until they have some championships under their belts. They are a talented, young team with the potential to do that, but lets not jump the gun.

Sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if that dynasty ends up happening in Kansas City and if that happens, will you still care?

not yet. they are a very young team with a tremendous upside. they have a solid nucleus of sidney crosby, evegni malakin, jordan staal and marc-andre fleury but if the season ended today they would be playing ottawa in the 1st round and ottawa would win based on the experience factor (alfredson, heatley, spezza) but for the pens give them about 2 or 3 years.
