A far away college with a dorm room OR a nearby college without dorm rooms (like where you go home everyday). Why?

I think this depends completely on how ready you are to leave home.

I went right away, with no "old" friends. I made new friends right away, and was fine. If I were looking at far-away colleges, I'd prefer something like Washington U, where there are LOTS of programs to help young people find new friends and interests, over University of Maryland, where most of the students are commuters and go home at night. Visit the college, and you'll get a feel for how much of a "family" it will help provide.

Pros to a nearby school are your family and the current friends who also plan to stick around your town. If you have younger siblings, you have the advantage of not being separated. You only have to adjust to one thing, a new place to attend classes, rather than a LOT of things, like a new home, new friends, new eating habits.

Hmm....I guess that depends on the person.

I would say a nearby college without a dorm for someone who wants to stay near their families. If you are a Mother or Father who has kids already and is going to college or back to college I would say nearby college because you can see you kids everyday and take care of them.

I personally want to go to far away college with a dorm. I think at that age you are getting ready to live alone and maybe after college start your career. I think this is great practice for being independent. This is seriously the first step in adulthood. All young adults need time away from their families to be their own person and explore the world! They need to meet new friends and maybe travel and look at different cities and countries.

It is a real emotional change for you also. It can be hard. But...if you stick at it, it gets easier. There are alot of programs for choosing the right college for you! Most, in fact I think all high schools have people that you can meet with and talk over where you want to go and where would be a good place for you. That really helps!!!!! Maybe you should try to see if you high school has one.

Alot of teens going to college get pressured to going to a school where their parents went. Don't go if you don't want to. You aren't them! You are your own person. This is what happens to alot of people. You want college to be a nice experience, not a bad one.

I don't think one is better for everybody. Everyone has their preferences. Hope this helped!!!!

I would want a far away college because going to college and having your own dorm room is better. I think that it is easier to study for exams and plus you have people nearby who can get you through that 35 page essay.

It really depends if you like your family. Sometimes people want to go to a college far away to get away from their family (I know I did). It also depends on the major that you want to persue. Check around to see which college has the best reputation for your major. It is really not good to pick a college for dorms it is better to pick it for its reputation.

A nearby college, because I love the area I live and, and don't want to leave it. I live near Chicago, and it rocks :-)

Depends on how much money you have and will be getting over the course of you going to college.

it depends if you'd rather be with your family or with people at college...
plus you might just want to keep your own bedroom instead of living at a dorm..

It seem to me that the answer depends entirely upon your relationship with your parents. In my case, I had loving and supporting parents. I had not need to "get away" during my college years. Other people need to move away to become independent and spread their wings. What does your heart tell you?

That depends on if you like being around the people you live with or not. Good luck!
